Subterranean Symphony

Subterranean Symphony

Life + Underworld = Subterranean Symphony

The proximity of life and death exists in our surroundings whether we are aware of it or not. Our daily lives and activities affect the world around us and as such they affect us in return. The project SUBTERRANEAN SYMPHONY consists of cinerary urns and a landscape of multifunctional mushroom clusters. The work is a reminder of what is present and as an altar to honour and cherish the unseen.

The ceramic mushrooms, Bee Water are designed to capture dew and rain, and thus provide bees and other insects with water without risk of them drowning. Besides being natural cups to hold liquid the product symbolizes a link between this realm and the underworld, and remind us how we are dependant on the activity and survival of other organisms like the bees for our own survival.

The urns, reminding of standing rocks, act as vanguards to the after-life. They function both as a cinerary urn during the funeral ceremony, as well as a vessel for relatives to cherish. The urns are burned filled with messages for the loved one. The messages and memories of a specific person have thus formed an indivisible part of the urn. Through the presence of the urn the loved one is remembered and take a material place in the everyday life of their family and friends, creating a spiritual proximity to someone who has left the physical world.

The sounds are a collection of subterranean, cosmological and heavenly melodies that reverberates of collected memories, connections and experiences.
