Workshop

Design Thing of the Baltic Sea

Design Thing of the Baltic Sea

Meeting + Matter = Design Thing of the Baltic Sea

In a workshop you in the audience is invited to take part in a "design thing" led by K3-students. You will work to solve controversy and challenges of the sea. Please register for the workshop here.

A design thing is a gathering of people, things and unresolved issues. An early form of a collective was actually the Thing/Ting/Allting, and was originally both social and material. In pre-Christian Nordic and Germanic societies these "Things" were the governing assemblies and places, where disputes were solved and political decisions made. How might such political spaces be reinterpreted to Design Things? Or, How might design reinterpret objects to things?

Students have been working on this through the issues the Baltic Sea and its inhabitants are faced with today; such as ghost nets, lack of fish and changing eco-systems. To stage some of these issues, a Design Thing will take place where the public is invited to take part in. The aim is to create a setting that sparks discussion, reflection and debate among different people. The proximity of design things are in focus when inquiring into the agency of not only designers and participants, but also of non-human ’actants’ such as objects, artifacts and even water and fish. In collaboration with the external stakeholder Marine Centre in Simrishamn.
