Clay + Explorations = Keramik Primitiv
Sketching in clay is what Pauline Matika is focusing on in her project Keramik Primitiv, where she explores the versatility but also limitation of clay by letting the material be the main decision-maker regarding the form language. This is presented in an exhibition showcasing ceramic objects where the material's properties have guided the artistic process and result.
In the project Keramik Primitiv, Pauline Matika explores sketching as a working method and final result in one. The result is sketch-like, unique wall pieces in stoneware. Pauline works according to the key words unpolished, sloppy and random. She disclaims partial responsibility for the objects' aesthetic expression, which are clearly marked by the manufacturing process. As a designer or artist, you can work detail-oriented and want to control the smallest detail in your works. In this project, she has chosen to deviate from that way of working by letting go of the need for control and surrender to just doing, by "sketching" in clay.
