Design Futures

Ana is a maker and jewelry designer, working closely with materiality and sensory responses. Her current work explores the function of jewelry as discursive tools for mental well-being, manifestation of personal identity and anti-stigmatization of mental health, with a focus on critical, reflective and participatory design. The project challenges ideas around luxury consumption as a signifier of mental status rather than social and speculates about a society that responds effectively to mental health needs.

Andrea Troilo is from the south-centre of Italy, where he finished with a degree in "Construction, Environment, and Territory." He is now pursuing a bachelor's degree in Design+Change at Linnaeus University. His passions include architecture, technology, industrial, and speculative design, which he strives to combine with a pragmatic approach to sustainability and innovation.

During the final design project of her BA studies Design + Change, Antonia challenges current ruling stereotypes which dictate the non-appearance of hair on women’s bodies. By using interventions in public spaces, she wants to create opportunities to nourish body positivity and bodily freedom, encourage people to reflect about the impact of present binary gender roles and give voice to the silence around body hair. Antonia advocates for more social and environmental justice in the world, whereat she values working closely with local communities, like she has been doing here in Malmö.

As a designer and craft practitioner, Camilla Uhlén is exploring how the tacit knowledge of site-specific craft practices can be shared for cultivating abilities of mindful engagement with others and nature.

Eszter Varga is a designer with a main focus on food and speculative futures. She is interested in exploring the connection between the two, and how they can inform human behaviour. She works with plant-based ingredients in her cooking and experiments, as she believes it is the way forward.

Georgian Andrei Turturica started their design education in product and space design. They have practiced sketching and 3D modeling to build a concrete understanding of esthetics and form-giving. Later on, Georgian turned towards system and participatory design, two branches that they find co-dependent. Currently, Georgian is developing a design framework supported by the means of system and participatory design. The pillars of their design framework are materiality, ethics, and creative direction. They find collaboration and social awareness to be crucial for social sustainability. As László Moholy-Nagy puts it, designing is not a profession but an attitude. Therefore Georgian values genuine and critical designing.

Ilias De Quidt is a photography and design artist. In his work “Auto-Destructive Design” he is working with fast biodegradable objects in an effort to create less waste whilst reflecting on the self-destructiveness of humanity.

Fossil (in)dependency in agriculture

This project is a participatory exploration of fossil fuel (in)dependency in agriculture in Sweden.

In collaboration with Länsstyrelsen Kronoberg, Kim researched the current energy usage within agriculture in the region. Through design research and participatory design methods, she explored how dependent the system is and how we might transition towards fossil fuel independency.

Kim is a designer striving for change beyond sustainability. Her focus lies in designing with others in transdisciplinary collaborations, exploring holistic solutions for wicked problems. Since her studies in Design + Change, she has been frequently turning to systemic design, with a special fascination for food systems.

Leen is a designer who has an experience in graphic design and

photography. She is designing a system that integrates diverse

cultures via home cuisine. It combines food with the fun of

experiencing new recipes, connecting other cultures via cuisine,

empowering individuals to start their own businesses, easing the

lives of people with daily responsibilities and obligations such as

workers, students and families.

Nadine is an entrepreneurial spirit with an opportunistic mind that loves to explore, learn new things within design and how change should be cultivated through creative thinking within innovative development. “I like to look at design as the ultimate change agent that could turn the truth of what we know in to the history we can learn from and as a designer I would love to be part of that transformational journey and reach for a better tomorrow through my work”

In her individual project she focuses on bullying as a social complex phenomenon among young children in compulsory school and through her work, she explores how participatory design can be used as a bullying prevention method and tool.

Re/Åter/Brand

Increasing the efficacy of the circular economy in the Återbruk through increased reuse, household items’ values are reframed and redirected from an early grave to the homes of people. In order to do this, this project has introduced repair as a means of giving new life to items, and digital presence to allow for easier access and communication of potential value.

As an ongoing student in design, Eve is continually looking to the next avenue, be it compelling, sustainability-related challenges (often with many dead ends), gaining insight or growth in fields that enhance design work, or engaging with the many knowledgeable people around.

Nathalie is a designer with a teaching background who is interested in systems surrounding her, strategic communication, interactions, and digital design. She develops her skills by combining pedagogy and design for sustainable change, flourishing female perspectives.

Noemi is a multidisciplinary designer with a focus in fashion and sustainability. Through her work she aims to tackle issues such as overconsumption and overproduction. In collaborative processes she explores themes of time, handicraft and clothing habits to find ways to cherish and treasure garments for as long as possible.

Rasmus is a multidisciplinary sustainability designer. He researches and works with issues of sustainability in the public sphere and community engagement.

In the past years he was a co-owner of ‘The Feminist Farmer’, a urban farm working closely with the community and regenerative methods. While other projects took him to the countryside of Småland, exploring rural cultural possibilities.

During the SSDD he is presenting a vision of future collaboration in a community and ideas on governing the public space.

Sebastian is coupling the experiences of his multifaceted background with his design skills to navigate complexity, define untapped potential, and give shape to the emergence of desirable synergies in a broad variety of contexts.

In this exhibition: ‘Making Society’ is a platform that connects knowledge, perspectives, resources, and citizen capabilities through the act of practical making. The participants are encouraged to discuss societal challenges, define their agency, and co-create change in real-time.

Selena Krivic is a multidisciplinary designer who focuses on providing sustainable solutions through service and UX design as her preferred media. She often tackles the contemporary issues of ethics both in relation to design and in general. ‘Sustainable Server Farming’ is a project where she aims, not only to raise the question of ‘Who owns our data?’, but to also visualise how the most optimal solution for a sustainable server farm would look like.

Servin Samadi is an interdisciplinary designer, her research focuses on the intersection of art and technology. Through her exposure to different cultures in Iran, Sweden, and North America, her unique background provides inspiration for her work, resulting in a design that combines the styles and artists she encountered in each country. She seeks to address social sustainability issues within urban environments, as well as the concepts of efficiency, beauty, and simplicity in her work.

Smaranda approaches design through a social sustainability lens. Her research consists of a critical design project, practicing ecofeminism. The project aims to contribute to the reclamation of witchcraft through design, feminism, ecology, and science. Using transdisciplinary collaboration and participatory design, she co‐created a space where the witchcraft narrative can be shifted, where women are encouraged to be curious, explore, speculate, and experiment with science and natural magic.

Allis is a visual communicator and mixed media artist with a focus on climate activism in various forms. In her work with visible mending she aims to impact the culture around textile waste: pushing for repairs to be the new(old) norm by putting mending on display and encouraging people to take action. Showing that there is another option and that repairing clothes can be about creating something unique, personalized and new. Her approach of using mending as a way of changing the waste culture within our society is based on the fact that being more connected to an item, and so the history of it, can lead to a greater sense of care.

Antara is an Indian visual communicator with a keen interest in combining analog and digital forms of art in her work. She is enthusiastic to work with topics which are important but not addressed enough. In her thesis that she has been working on, she is using Mythology and the story of the Greek goddess Medusa, as a metaphor. Her goal is to empower teenage girls and teach them about rape and the importance of consent. She aims to use her best skills as a designer to create her final work.

Bijou Burns’ work is titled “Assembling in the New Normal.” Her project explores how we humans can assemble in a public space during this post-pandemic time.  A key inspiration for this work is the theory of crown shyness in plants, specifically trees and how humans can do the same as a form of social distancing. The aim of the project is to bring awareness to how designers can create spaces that are better for the public to meet and interact with sustainably.

Clara is an italian visual communicator focusing on graphic design, digital art and photography. Her thesis project focuses on Mental Health within the students at Linnaeus University students, she is currently working on her project with her colleague Elizabeth Saduma. The aim of the project is creating more awareness about the importance of mental health and the effect of it on students. The project investigate the use of creativity and visual communication as a tool to help preventing mental health struggles.

Elin Dalemo´s work is based on her connection to feminism and topics of social sustainability. Her interest currently lies in the world of online conversations surrounding the topic and how feminism is evolving through social media platforms like Tiktok.

Elizabeth is a Kenyan designer and visual communicator with interest in graphic design, film, photography, and fine arts. Elizabeth is passionate about topics relating to social sustainability. Her thesis project centers on Mental Health among Linnaeus University students, in collaboration with her colleague Clara Robiolio. The goal of the project is to destigmatize mental health and create a safe space for students in Kalmar.

Ellyn is an Australian animator, illustrator and 2d and 3d artist. She is currently working on a 2d animated short film for her thesis project that handles the topic of toxic productivity and how taking a slower approach to life is important in a world that values speed over self care. The goal of this short animated film project is to open conversations and bring awareness to how hustle culture and toxic productivity is dangerous to our wellbeing.

Illa is a visual communicator and an animator with a keen interest in combining illustrations and 2d animation. Her passion centered on kids and she considers them as a source of inspiration so her approach is to highlight the hidden issues in society that are related directly to the children. She is currently working on 2D animation for her final project that visualizes the failure to provide the rights of children with disabilities.

Josefine Sjöholm is a miniature artist that LOVES to create worlds through storytelling. In this project she has chosen to work with mythology and norms. Telling a story about acceptance and not feeling that you belong in a group in the world of Vättarna. That we should break down the norms and accept the uniqueness that we are all as people.

Leo Hosp is a white queer designer, artist and visual communicator, currently in their third year of the program Visual Communication +Change. They have a strong interest in intersectionality, utopian future scenarios, queering, belonging, and space(s). In their current work they explore how queering can be a visual practice of creating intersectionally inclusive public spaces.

Saga Arndt is a Swedish visual communicator and photographer with a strong interest in questions around social sustainability, geopolitics and human rights. In her thesis work she is, through the usage of negative space and erasure poetry, questioning the wording used in Swedish media when reporting about refugees. The projcet aims to to provide the audience with a deeper understanding of the interconnection between media, wording, discrimination and xenophobia.

Sandra is a Norwegian illustrator and designer with a passion to geek out over anything that catches their interest. Their project centres on an investigative look into tourism, the means to make it more sustainable and how it relates to the wildlife in Norway, mainly the famous puffins.
