Matter Displaced

We have gathered the Nordic designers, artists and companies using locally found waste in new designs. Each has a story to tell and we hope to inspire you by exhibiting their products and waste material side by side. We also invite you to think about interdisciplinary collaboration and to also question, can anything be re-made?

The second part of the exhibition is the launch of new concepts created by the four main collaborators as a challenge for this exhibition at Southern Swedish Design Days. 

Anna had this great idea to go beyond just showing existing examples and create something new for the exhibition so we can talk about it and stand behind the idea. This became the task for the four main collaborators of Matter displaced:

Tobia Zambotti and Aleksi Saastamoinen developed "COAT-19" together

Aleksi Saastamoinen is a Finnish designer from Helsinki. He first discovered his interest for creation and fashion while growing up within the fashion industry and thus designed his first garment pieces for the family owned Finland based brand R-Collection.

He is currently enrolled at the Aalto University as a BA Fashion Design student but he continues to work on various design projects and collaborating with other artists for sustainable creations. 

His most recent and noteworthy collaborations include a sustainable garment collection with the WWF Finland organization; and "COAT-19", the creation of a puffer jacket filled with single-use facemasks, made in collaboration with Italian designer Tobia Zambotti as part of a bigger artistic project made to raise awareness on worldwide environmental pollution of facemasks.

Tobia Zambotti is Founder & Design Director of Atelier Tobia Zambotti. After his B.A in Architecture at IUAV (Venice) and M.A in Interior Design at Politecnico di Milano (Milan), Tobia moved to Shanghai to work with Alberto Caiola Studio, an award winning firm specialized in interiors.

At the beginning of 2019 Tobia decided to leave the chaotic and polluted Chinese city for an opposite lifestyle in Reykjavik where he founded Atelier Tobia Zambotti, a sustainable and future-oriented multidisciplinary design studio.

Tobia's projects got an important media coverage from prestigious magazines all over the world such as Frame, Dezeen, Interior Design, Forbes, Elle Decor, Designboom and many more (+)

Recent works include Perlan Ice cream parlour - an immersive abstract ice cave located in the biggest museum in Iceland, The Fan Chair - a chair collection that gives a new life to discarded stadium seats and Couch-19 - an iceberg-inspired modular pouf stuffed with disposable masks collected from the streets and Coat-19 - the puffer jacket filled with single-use masks that wants to highlight the absurd pandemic-related pollution.

Better Weather is a design studio founded in Copenhagen in 2020, producing unique-state pieces: furniture, interiors and objects for life.

Fused in the collaboration of Anne Werner and Kasper Lynge – with past lives in fashion, surface design, printmaking and contemporary art – Better Weather’s interdisciplinary practice navigates an abiding investigation of form and an urban social/cultural context that demands more from design than anonymity, passivity, and the nervous echoes of the modern.

The studio is grounded in sustainability – reincarnating and barely taming our planetary debris – each piece is started with a desire to work with materials sourced from factory bi-products or industrial and urban waste. At the exhibition Matter Displaced at Southern Sweden Design Days the duo along with Direkt Laminat are presenting new designs in part of the studio's Chubby Project, which is characterized by the bubble silhouette of the designs.

Malmö Upcycling Service is a design studio, based in Malmö, focusing on exploring the potential of materials left over from local manufacturers – materials that are often considered garbage. The main purpose of this initiative is to question the roll as well as emphasize the responsibility of the designer in circular production and sustainable design processes. M.U.S. works mainly with manufacturers from the south region of Sweden, using their waste material to create new products and change the perception of waste from trash to resource.
