The Collection meets: Roma jewelery

Hidden + Treasures = The Collection meets: Roma jewelery

The temporary exhibition The Collection meets: Roma jewelery takes on burning questions about community and belonging.

In connection with the exhibition a conversation will also be held, Thursday 19/5 at 17.30–18.30.

At our Swedish museums, we encounter a reflection of society's norms and attitudes. We can also follow how the collection of objects and exhibition themes has changed throughout history. Whose story are we telling? Which stories are allowed to become part of our collective community? How can we, as an art museum, broaden our perspectives in areas such as art, crafts and design?

The Roma community carries a unique and high-quality jewelry and craft tradition. It is also a Swedish cultural treasure, but one that hasn't historically been treated as such – it has been been viewed as someone else's story. And a fire that is not maintained stands the risk of falling, and eventually burning out.

Malmö Art Museum carries a few Roma jewelery in the collections, but during The Collection meets: Roma jewelery, precious items will be borrowed and displayed inside the Art Museum's exhibition The Collection, in temporary showcases. In an alternative timeline, these showcases might have been permanent, in yet another timeline they might not have been there at all.

The Collection meets: Roma jewelery is created in collaboration with Erland Kaldaras Nikolizsson at the The Roma Information and Knowledge Center in Malmö. Kaldaras Nikolizsson has been assigned as national developer for Roman crafts since 2019. The exhibition is also produced in collaboration with  Christina Zetterlund, a Craft and Design historian and senior lecturer at the Linnaeus University. She has previously worked with Hälsingland's museum to create the archive for Rosa Taikon's workshop, the famous jewelery artist and Roma human rights activist.

In connection with the exhibition a conversation will also be held, Thursday 19/5 at 17.30–18.30.
